Leonie A. Sarubbo is a professor at the Icam Tech School of the Catholic University of Pernambuco (Recife, Brazil) and is leader of the Biosurfactant Research Team. She obtained her B.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from the Catholic University of Pernambuco, her M.Sc. from the Federal University of Pernambuco (Recife, Brazil) and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil). Following postdoctoral training in biosurfactant production, she joined the Catholic University of Pernambuco in February 2001 as a professor. Professor Sarubbo has experience in the production of microbial and plant biosurfactants and other types of green surfactants for industrial applications in the petroleum, chemical, food and cosmetic industries. She has 20 years of experience in academic research and has collaborative partnerships throughout Brazil, at international academic and research institutions and researches in Europe and with many Brazilian industrial establishments. Prof. Sarubbo has been engaged in R&D activities in the fields of Energy, Environment and Water resources, with a focus on the development of new biotechnological products, including biosurfactants, biopolymers and biocomposites based on bacterial cellulose. To date, 20 PhD and 29 Master’s students have received their degrees under her supervision and 09 PhD, four Master’s students and three postdoctoral researchers are currently working under her guidance. She also acts as an ad hoc member of six national and international development agencies and has received four national awards for developing sustainable research, all in the field of biosurfactants applied to environmental recovery. Prof. Sarubbo has about 270 publications in international journals and books as well as 20 patents. Prof. Sarubbo is also the founding member of the Advanced Institute of Technology and Innovation - IATI (Recife, Brazil), acting as Scientific Director of R&D Projects developed in partnership with industries.
